We had occasion to come to Washington, DC for the 4th of July Weekend in 2009. That weekend included catching up with my favorite cousin, Alan, who’s been living on the west coast for 20 years, a trip to the National Zoo, and some nice meals in the city including breakfast at Carnegie Deli and Sunday Brunch at Firefly.
We stayed at a boutique hotel called the Madera in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of northwest DC. Firefly, a restaurant and bar, is conveniently located on the ground floor of the Madera. While catching up with family and enjoying some of DC’s finest cuisine was interesting, our visit to the National Zoo was the photographic high water mark of the trip. There were and continue to be many engaging exhibits and animal attractions at the zoo, but six years later, I’m able to look at the photos of the flamingos and marvel at their beauty and elegance.
